You had me at Same love

Known for their thrifty style and contagious energy, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are gaining fans with every song they create.  Ellen Degeneres recently had them on her show to let the world know how much she really loves the rap duo.  Their album “The Heist” was released back in October 2012, and is now gaining worldwide attention with hits like Thrift Shop & Can’t Hold Us.

Same Love, the most recent song to hit the airways, is what has made me a fan forever.  While leaving the gym one afternoon, I happened to catch it on the radio for the first time, and had to pull over in a parking lot because I knew I was about to take in something quite profound.  Closing my eyes and just using the sense of sound, I felt as if I was listening to the truth.  No bullshit, no lies, no promises left for dead; just the plain ole truth.

A well-known biblical figure once said, “The truth will set you free,”  and if you didn’t feel a bit liberated after listening to this song; I suggest you go back and press replay.  As a gay man and someone who has struggled in his early life to accept himself for who he is, this has become my new anthem.

With gay marriage now legal in 12 states, a president who supports the idea of same-sex marriage, primetime television creating shows based around gay characters, and the first NBA player to publicly come out as an openly gay man; Macklemore & Lewis’s Same Love reminds us that in order to get to the truth, we must strip away the fear and rise up.

June is a special month for the LGBT community celebrating equality, and the song couldn’t have come at a better time.   It continues to climb the charts and already has a little over 45 million hits on Youtube.  Whether you are for or against gay rights, you are listening to the voice of the future.
