Strap On

With the F/W season almost through, I’m very much looking forward to a bit of change and less layers in my daily routine.  In the meantime, I’ve been trying to keep warm on the streets of New York with some of my favorite outerwear.  I haven’t been able to live without a topcoat.  For a professional like myself, it’s a great go-to piece to throw on over any look that might need structure.  Those who feel a bit basic in this style coat, strap on a fun colored or textured belt you might already have in your wardrobe to add some shape.

Winter Blues

Feeling a bit blue lately?  The runways were full of it last February showing off every single shade under the cool sky.  I particularly love seeing it in stores this season since it is one of my favorite colors to wear besides red. Despite what some critics might say, I’m not afraid to layer several different shades on top of each other, and it seems designers weren’t either.  To break it up, mix in a pop of print or block it with another bold color.

Camo Flock

Camo commanded its presence on the runways for fall.  Designers flocked to this particular print giving their take on the masking motif.  I particularly prefer something more authentic when it comes to this type of pattern, but couldn’t resist purchasing this button-down from J-Crew.  It looked so real and for the price I couldn’t pass it up.  Anywho, when it comes to wearing anything military-inspired, I’m not a fan of dressing  full on.  I suggest focusing on one piece like a jacket, shirt or trousers.  Then mix it up with other trends from the season.  Keeps it a bit unexpected if you ask me!

J. Hilburn Pop-Up Shop

Dallas-based luxury menswear label J.Hilburn, recently popped up in New York’s fashionable SoHo neighborhood several weeks ago.  A first of hopefully many to come, the idea behind the temporary brick-and-mortar showroom was to simply create brand awareness.  Acknowledged for being the largest maker of customs shirts and made-to-measure trousers in the world, it seems like expanding to permanent storefronts is the natural thing to do in building the brand.  With several expected to open in New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago in the next several years, it looks as if world domination is on the horizon.  styleTV was lucky enough to snag an invite to their exclusive press preview.  What we loved most about J. Hilburn?  Click & watch!

Fall for these shoe trends

I was recently asked by the Sioux City Journal to offer tips on how to wear some of fall’s hottest boot trends.  From the combat-inspired footwear we saw at Chanel and Saint Laurent, to the ankle booties at Rodarte and Versace, designers didn’t hesitate to hold back this season.  If you’re feeling a bit intimated, I’ve got you covered with these simple tricks.

Mr. Moto

Motorcycle jackets have earned themselves the nickname “moto” since becoming a staple season after season.  If you’re looking to add a bit of badassness to your wardrobe, this is the piece that will surely make you feel like your living on the edge.  From Givenchy to Armani, the biker-inspired leather jackets were being shown over all the runways again last February, but with a bit of a makeover.  From different colors to innovative detailing, designers decided to give their take on the edgy skin.   If you’re planning to purchase, I suggest investing.  Yes, you will pay more now, but will have it for years to come to enjoy.   With only 55 days left until Christmas, it might not be a bad idea to ask Santa to add one to your list.  Just a helpful thought!

Trick or Tweed

As we near the end of October, the fall chill has already started to settle in.  Although not quite ready to completely bundle up, layering has begun for me.  One piece I enjoy sporting around town is a tweed blazer.  For those unaware, tweed is a great material to wear this time of year because of its durability and resistance to a little rain.  Not to mention, the slightly heavier material makes for the perfect informal outerwear.  Designers would agree being that this was a dominate trend, along with herringbone and pinstripe, shown throughout F/W 2013 collections.  A great tip-Keep a scarf close by (another of my fall favorites) for those unexpected windy moments.

Opposites Attract

The perfect mix, black & white have played a huge part of designers collections for decades.  Chanel, Calvin Klein and Dior are just a few names that have set trends with this color combo.  Now, pretty much apart of their DNA and many others, it continues to show up on the runways season after season.  Some may argue those who tend to embrace it are just playing it safe.  I myself was never a fan until recently.  If you haven’t already noticed, I’ve been wearing it like crazy.   I’m not sure if my style has evolved to this or a phase I may be going through.  What I can I tell you, is that I’ve been loving how designers have been showing it for the past couple seasons.  From stripes, to leather, to the pairing with neons and metallics, I simply just can’t get enough.

Indian Summer

I’ve been loving lately that traces of summer seem to still be lingering here in the Northeast. With temperatures allowing us to extend the use of our summer staples just a little longer, I’m not completely ready to dive into full fall attire.  Keeping in touch with summer, yet starting to call on fall, marrying these two seasons when it comes to your look can sometimes be tricky.  A simple tip to avoid feeling completely out of season? Mix and match your accessories!  It also doesn’t hurt to keep things neutral for a seasonless touch.

Trend Alert: Extended Stay

Rules are meant to be broken and in fashion it happens all the time. One that is under constant scrutiny is the dilemma of wearing white after Labor day.  A favorite of mine to ignore, it’s now getting its long overdue stamp of approval on the runways.  With more and more designers extending this summer favorite into their F/W collections, it looks as if white isn’t cutting its unexpected trip anytime soon.
